A few ladies have messaged me asking what they need to know to prepare for their photoshoot. And I'm always happy to explain, but it occured to me that everyone should have an insight to the process-- even if they haven't booked yet! Even if you're just curious...so here's a few delicious tidbits.
It's OKAY to be nervous! I don't expect you to walk into your session with a boatload of confidence. That's what happens when you LEAVE. Most of us aren't models by trade, we don't earn our living in front of a camera. It's a thrill because it's outside our comfort zones... yes, that's right, even for me! When I selfie-session for my website (and I often do), I'm nervoud each and every time. Until I see the results, anyway.
I cannot judge you. Literally, incapable.
I need you to know that I truly believe each and every one of us is beautiful. I am NEVER going to judge your body by comparing it to someone else's. Lord knows I'm no supermodel either, and I have "problem areas" too. As the photographer, it's my job to use the camera to hide your unfavorite parts. I'm good at it, too.... trust me!
Consider having professional makeup done. I have access to a beauty consultant if you need a reference. Or if you know someone or can pop into a salon, it's worth it. Even though you're beautiful anyway, having a cosmetic image outside from your normal routine look can work wonders for your confidence and energy level.
Let's talk about those shoes.
Barefoot is sexy, sure. Stockings are sexy too. And no law says "thou MUST wear heels to thy session", BUT.... let's face it: heels or stilettos do a lot for your look. They lengthen the line of your leg, giving you the appearance of "legs for days." They also give your calves and thighs a natural muscled tone, and add a certain element of sass or class to your style. They're not a necessity, but maybe you should try a pair on before you decide to go without.
Setting the Mood
There's a certain magic to music. If there's music that makes you feel sexy, vibrant, energetic or sultry, make a playlist and bring it with you. There's no wrong answer here: country music, nightclub beats, mellow jazz... it's easier to relax when you can lose yourself to the music.
Be Prepared to Work It
This one's the biggie: you will probably leave feeling like you're walking out of a gym. Posing, while it looks easy, is usually using muscles you're not used to using. Creating a natural-looking pose sometimes means stretching an unnatural mixture of muscles. You're going to have to trust me when I say "arch your back" one more time, or "reach with those toes!" The end reult is SO worth it.
So there you have it: a few secrets from my experience behind the camera. You won't make a fool of yourself, I promise. You'll feel amazing. You'll probably inspire others to do it, too. Friends, realtives, even perfect strangers. And what's more amazing than that?
